Etsy mud team

So i'm slowly but surely getting sucked into the etsy world (and blogging world) I just became a member of the etsy mud team. Some of my favorite etsy ceramic artists are part of this group (namely judi tavill) Hopefully I get a hang of this stuff soon.

broke my etsy cherry

finally got the courage to make an etsy shop.

I had some great results with the last ^10 firing. I'm still working on my ^6 glazes.. but hopefully most of my glaze worries will be over (for the most part) soon.

here are some pictures.

I bit the bullet and signed up for a glaze workshop with John Britt in NC. I'm pretty stoked since I have been following (stalking) Michael Klein's blog and his blogroll. I've come to read so many potter blogs and love them. mmm nerdy. Anyway 5 days of glaze testing and learning what the chemicals actually do should be damn good for me.

In other news, I'm in love with Ayumi Horie and should have some cool stuff coming out of my little kiln tomorrow and cone 10 next week.

making stuff

I'm making stuff and really excited. As a new pottery enthusiast I like to test and restest my boundaries. So today I threw the largest bowl i have ever been to. It is 7' tall and a little over 12" wide. Bad ass.

foliage and birds

I was just reading a handful of ceramic blogs and got to thinking... what is the obsession with foliage and birds? I bet if there is some sort of drawing on it, it involves birds.. and some sort of plant life. :/

minor success minor failure

unloaded the kiln today, since it was a group firing not all of my stuff fit. Most of my bowls/plates/larger work was left out. I did get back a bunch of cups and some are good.. some need fixing.. with a hammer.

Since i'm working at a new studio and using their glazes it is going to take some adjusting. It's going alright, I think I should have it in a few months.

anyway.. here are some of my favorites.

kiln shenanigans

So I'm semi blindly go through this and I don't really mind. I love experimenting. I got an old paragon kiln last week, it's a small 1.3cu ft chamber. I fired my first bisque yesterday and it went great. I'm running a bunch of glaze tests right now... so hopefully that goes just as well.. since it's a manual kiln without kiln sitter.

We unload a cone 10 on wednesday and I should get back the most cups i've ever made. I'm nervous and really excited to see them.

yay clay.

dreams and nightmares

I've been glazing like a maniac and having nightmares about fatal glazing mistakes. It's weird to wake up in a panic that I misglazed certain bowls and rush to the studio to wash them off.

I have also been dreaming about and drawing balloons, and they have made their way onto dozens of cups/bowls.

these drawings are on a few bowls/mugs/sake bottles that will be fired this week. We load the kiln on Friday and unload Sunday afternoon. I'm excited since this is my first real run at making a lot of functional ware at one time.

yay.

my first and possibly last post

I'll start by posting pictures of my garage/studio. I like it quite a bit, perhaps even more than any other space I have ever had. I share the garage with Jake, his manly tools and motorcycles.

After my time at Penland, I should write about that later, I started making cups and drawing on them. It's probably a direct effect of being around Brooke Noble and Megan LeVesseur.

I went through a brief phase of drawing and making decapitated heads and bodies with flailing genitals...good times, but not the right ally. I like to call this 3 month venture post grand school angst.

I like the style and am ready to move on. I've always been interested in people interacting with my work, specifically touching it, but somehow it never gelled together. Cups!! cups are my answer!!!

so now I'm focused on making sets of cups with unique drawing on them that interact with each other in a group setting. Here is some of my greenware, I'm looking forward to the next firing.
